
Dr. Pawan Kumar Chaubey

Dr. Pawan Kumar Chaubey is a leading expert in high-performance computing and climate modeling, with a specialization in extreme hydro-climate events. His research primarily focuses on forecasting and modeling extreme weather patterns, particularly over South Asia. Through his work, Dr. Chaubey has contributed significantly to the understanding of the uncertainties that arise from different climate models in predicting these climate extremes.
Over the past several years, Dr. Chaubey has been involved in numerous high-impact research projects, including the analysis of extreme precipitation and compound climate extremes, and their potential impact on vital water resources. Among his notable contributions is his role in India’s National Action Plan on Climate Change, where he assessed the effects of climate change on the water, health, and agricultural sectors across various Indian River Basins (IRBs). His work at DST-MCECCR, Banaras Hindu University, offered critical insights into how climate-induced extremes, such as floods and droughts, would affect these crucial resources on both local and regional scales.
After awarding his Ph.D. from Banaras Hindu University, Dr. Chaubey joined Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Mohali as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate. There, his groundbreaking research on compound extremes focused on the intensification of extreme weather events in the Hindu Kush Himalayas—an ecologically sensitive region that is particularly vulnerable to climate-induced shifts in the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). His findings highlight the projected future changes in extreme weather events in this region, contributing to global efforts aimed at protecting biodiversity and mitigating ecosystem damage.
Dr. Chaubey's work is closely aligned with several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 3, 13 & 15.
