Plastic pollution poses a growing challenge to both ecosystems and human health, underscoring the need for materials that are safe, circular, and biodegradable. Alginate, a kelp-derived biopolymer, offers a renewable and compostable alternative with excellent film-forming properties for single-use applications.  My PhD research, conducted in collaboration with industry, focuses on developing greener, low-impact alginate extraction processes tailored for bioplastic production. By combining life-cycle assessment, chemical hazard analysis, and predictive toxicology, I aim to design processes that minimize environmental burdens while improving polymer quality and performance.

My research supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by advancing safer, resource-efficient bioplastic development; SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) by improving process efficiency through optimized design; and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by reducing exposure to hazardous substances and promoting biodegradable packaging alternatives to petroleum-based plastics.

As a Digital GreenTalent Awardee, I’m excited to engage with the Green Talents network to exchange ideas, integrate modelling and optimization tools for bioprocessing, digital hazard and life-cycle assessment tools, and accelerate the global transition toward safer, lower-impact biodegradable materials.
