Moazzam Shah Bukhari Syed

PhD candidate at Technological University Dublin (Ireland)

Moazzam S.B. Syed is a multiple international award-winning social entrepreneur, youth and education activist, and researcher. He is currently a PhD candidate at Technological University Dublin, Ireland, within the Research Ireland Centre for Research Training in Advanced Networks for Sustainable Societies (ADVANCE CRT). His doctoral thesis, Enhancement of Data Quality for SDG 11.6.2 Monitoring: A Two-Level Information Modelling Approach, explores how key interoperability innovation from health informatics can improve the way environmental data is structured, shared, and reused. His current research focuses on data and information quality in Earth informatics, with the overarching goal of achieving contextually rich environmental data that can be used beyond its primary purpose, contributing to wider sustainability goals.

Moazzam’s work advocates that addressing sustainability challenges requires combining large volumes of heterogeneous, computable datasets to support efficient and effective decision/policy making, particularly in the context of environmental sustainability. All of this underscores his commitment to advancing open, interoperable, and trustworthy data practices that can strengthen both scientific research and policy implementation.

Alongside academia, Moazzam has over a decade of leadership experience in the social, development, and education sectors. Moazzam has held global youth leadership roles, including Co-Chair for the Education for Sustainable Development, Greening Education, and Education for Climate Action Working Group at UNESCO’s SDG4Youth Network (2021–2024). He is an alumnus of the U.S. Department of State’s Community Engagement Exchange Programme (2022–2023 Fellow) and a Young Leader with the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust.

His contributions have been recognised through the Diana Award (2022), the Commonwealth Youth Award Special Commendation (2023), and a place in Ireland’s 30 Under 30 Top Tech Innovators 2025 list by Business Post.
