Nicolas Charron currently studies civil engineering with a specialisation in sustainable mobility as a master student at Polytechnique Montréal under the supervision of Professor Catherine Morency at the Chaire Mobilité. After graduating from Polytechnique Montréal with a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, he changed fields in order to focus on interregional and interurban public transportation in Québec.

This change was inspired by a student exchange program in 2022, where he studied for a semester at the Technische Universität Berlin. He witnessed the potential of a well-structured transportation network for sustainable mobility during the 9-Euro-Ticket initiative. The comparisons with public transit back home were particularly jarring. The interregional public transportation networks in Canada are lagging behind the progress made by the rest of the world, as it is the only G7 country without a high-speed rail network. He was then inspired to sign up for public transit courses as part of his bachelor's degree orientation courses. He had a research internship at the Chaire Mobilité as his last bachelor’s internship, where he worked on a public transit planification, simulation and optimisation open-source platform as a software developer.

His research includes analysing origin-destination surveys and current transit networks to diagnose the accessibility of transit for urban as well as rural communities and using transportation demand data to create a methodology for the localisation of interregional public transit stations. His goal for his research is to provide the methodological basis for the design of an efficient, affordable and accessible public transit system to provide travel, personal and professional opportunities for people all over Québec.
