Sandesh Poudel is a doctoral student in Agricultural and Biological Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where his research focuses on the convergence of digital technologies and sustainable agriculture innovation. His work combines robotics, drones, computer vision, machine learning, and precision agriculture to develop intelligent and low-cost solutions that enhance food system resilience and sustainability.

Originally from Nepal, Sandesh’s commitment to agricultural transformation is rooted in his early exposure to the challenges faced by smallholder farmers, including limited access to mechanization and decision support tools. This drives his mission to democratize agriculture through open-source, affordable, and scalable systems that empower farmers to make informed and data-driven decisions. Through his research, he aims to create intelligent systems capable of targeted interventions contributing to climate-resilient and sustainable production systems.

His research philosophy emphasizes participatory innovation, working directly with farmers and extension specialists to create technologies that are scientifically sound and readily accepted by farmers. By integrating local knowledge with advanced digital methods, he strives to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and real-world agricultural practices.

Sandesh’s current projects include developing autonomous robotic platforms and drone-based sensing systems that use artificial intelligence to solve the weeding problem and guide precision intervention. He believes that digital agriculture must advance equity, environmental stewardship, and livelihood security simultaneously, benefiting both people and the planet. Sandesh envisions a future where every farmer, regardless of geography or scale, can thrive in an increasingly digital and climate-challenged world. He is also a Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR) Fellow.
