Bridging Disciplines, Building Futures: The 2025 GreenTalents Spring School
This year's Digital GreenTalents Spring School brought together our awardees and recognised researchers, some of whom are former Green Talents alumni, for a week of connection, inspiration, and interdisciplinary exchange. The programme was designed as a space for meaningful dialogue across disciplines, inviting participants to explore today’s most pressing sustainability challenges through many lenses.
Berlin, 19 May 2025 – The SpringSchool started with opening words by Dr. Rainer Müssner from the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. Reflecting on his professional career, Dr. Müssner stated that friends and networks have proved to be among the most important factors in his career. And this message resonated throughout the week. Whether during group discussions, coffee breaks, trips to Frankfurt and Kalrsruhe or the evening pub quizzes, the spirit of connection and exchange was palpable – underscoring Dr. Müssner's point that professional growth is often rooted in the relationships we build along the way.
Over the course of the week, participants immersed themselves in a diverse programme of lectures and workshops, exploring a variety of subjects. In his keynote Dr. Thiago S. Gouvea from the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence spoke about human-in-the-loop approaches in biodiversity assessment, while Dr. Mierk Schwabe from the German Aerospace Center gave us insights into breakthroughs in quantum computing. Connecting sustainability with policy, Prof. Dr. Henning Wilts presented the German circular economy strategy.
One of the week’s standout moments was the involvement of numerous Green Talents alumni, showcasing the strength of this global community – even years after receiving the award. Some alumni shared impressive career journeys, including roles such as Task Force Bureau Member at the IPCC or Deputy Director at a research institute. Others led a thought-provoking workshop on designing future narrative scenarios and offered valuable career insights and mentorship to current participants.
Midweek, participants stepped out of the classroom and into the field to visit four innovative organisations, gaining firsthand insight into how sustainability is put into practice. The week wrapped up with a "Show us Your Talent" night. With music and dance, some surprising performances as well as a music quiz, this was the perfect way to end the week and strengthen the connections made.
